The German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industries (GPCCI), last October 13, 2017, hosted the Economic Forum entitled “The Philippine Mining Industry: Nowhere to Go but Up!” held at the German Club Manila. Attendees of the forum engaged in an active discussion, led by Atty. Ronald Recidoro, Executive Director of the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines.

Atty. Recidoro characterized the geographic location in the Pacific Ring of Fire as both “a blessing and a curse.” While earthquakes and super typhoons bring destruction, blessings are in the form of minerals such as copper, gold, and nickel. The speaker admits that the process of uncovering these minerals, particularly nickel, are unsightly. Images of such are then exploited, drawing tremendous criticisms that have affected the Mining Industry in the Philippines.

Currently, the mining industry faces various obstacles impeding the maximization of resources and contribution to the country. Policy uncertainty, as no new mining projects since 2010 have been approved, repels inventors to risk their capitals. Legal issues such as the DAO 2017-10 or the ban on open-pit mining and the closure and suspension of 28 mining projects by previous DENR Secretary Gina Lopez halt the potential of the industry to be realized. Atty. Recidoro notes that such actions impact the livelihood of Filipinos and regions who are dependent on mining.

Likewise, the Build! Build! Build! Project and the appointments in the Department of Finance and Department of Environment and Natural Resources could be a hopeful step towards progress. Within the Chamber of Mines, Atty. Recidoro is hopeful in improving its standards and communications, increasing transparency, and enhancing activities within its members. His commitment to alleviate negative public perception and encourage responsible mining ended the forum on a positive and insightful note.

The GPCCI would like to extend its gratitude to Atty. Ronald Recidoro for imparting his knowledge and expertise on Mining and to the participants for their presence and participation.
