GPCCI ITC Meeting - Powering the Digital Economy: The Current State of Data Centers in the Philippines

On 5 June 2025, GPCCI officially launched its second Information Technology Committee (ITC) with a discussion of the country's current data center state. The topic focused on empowering Philippines' data center capabilities while also tackling key industry challenges.

GPCCI Head of Government Affairs and Data Protection Officer Yves Aguilos opened the event. This was followed by a welcoming remark by GPCCI ITC Chairperson Mr. Martin Baulig, who highlighted that data centers in the Philippines have the potential to play a significant role in the country's digital transformation. Thus, further elaborating on the need to identify opportunities and strategies for developing strong digital infrastructure.  

 

Data Center Association of the Philippines Chairman & Co-Founder Steven Davis tackled the overview of the Philippines’ current data center state. Mr. Davis began his presentation by defining the role of data centers, particularly identifying what type of data infrastructure can best support the Philippines’ fast-growing demand. He highlighted that the country is the 2nd fastest emerging economy in SEA with a 5.86% rise in GDP and 2nd best connected SEA country with 85.6 million internet users. Moreover, Mr. Davis underscored that the Philippines has the "most amenable workforce in the world", describing its workforce as one of its key assets due to its culturally alignment, globally fluency, trainability, and growth mindset. Complementing this skilled workforce, Mr, Davis also highlighted some Philippine Government initiatives to support the data center and cloud industry, some of these are the: Industry Public Service Act (RA 11659), National Broadband Plan (NBP), and CREATE More Act of 2024. At the convergence of the Philippines’ emerging digital economy, strong workforce, and government incentives, Mr. Davis emphasized that the Philippines has accomplished strong progressive strides. 

 

Following Mr. Davis' presentation, GPCCI ITC Vice-Chairperson Tobias Rast delivered the event's closing remarks. He emphasized that the future of the Philippine digital economy hinges on the development of robust digital infrastructure. Mr. Rast further noted that the Philippines has the potential to lead in Southeast Asia, encouraging bold thinking and strategic planning to effectively navigate and advance the digital economy.
