GPCCI Policy Committee Explores Opportunities in Responsible Mineral Supply Chain at Minerals Security Partnership Forum

28.08.2024

The GPCCI Policy and Advocacy Committee (PAC) held the event, “Exploring Opportunities on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains,” last 20 August 2024, discussing the Minerals Security Partnership's (MSP) effect on supply chains as part of the policy updates of the Philippine mining sector.

Engr. Michael Cabalda, Special Assistant to the DENR Secretary on Sustainable Mining, discussed the overview on the Philippine mining sector. He elaborated the four priorities of the mining sector – invitation of investments to enhance Philippine value to the global supply chain, digitalization of the industry for transparency and responsible mining, promotion of the rights and welfare of indigenous groups, and improvement of the rehabilitation and innovative strategies. Furthermore, Engr. Cabalda mentioned that these priorities are essential for long-term sustainability of the Philippine mining sector and is open to partnerships that align with these objectives.

Mr. Philipp Dupuis, Minister Counsellor and Head of the Economic Trade Section of the EU Delegation to the Philippines, provided an insightful discussion on MSP Forum as a joint initiative between concerned stakeholders with common interests, promoting policy dialogue and cooperation on critical raw minerals produce despite ongoing supply chain disruptions. He also mentioned that the MSP Forum is voluntary only to those who commit to economic security through responsible mining.

Atty. Roderick Salazar led the Q&A to further discuss the efforts of the Philippine government and the European Union towards creating a sustainable minerals supply chain and foster global cooperation.

The PAC Meeting on Mining Industry was held at German Club Manila.
