Anchoring Dual Education and Training in the Philippines

16/09/2019

On September 7, 35 tech-voc teachers of San Pedro Relocation Center National High School were trained by GPCCI’s K to 12 PLUS Project team to localize elements of the German Dual Education and Training (DET) approach in the mandatory work immersion subject of senior high school.

The teachers represented 11 specializations under the Technical Vocational Livelihood track of SPRCNHS. Each specialization – from metalworking technology to food processing to garment making – harbours the opportunity to improve the learning experience of students during their 320-hour practical training in a company.

Over the past four years, GPCCI, under the K to 12 PLUS Project, has been working with SPRCNHS and various companies to better prepare graduates for the world of work. Several tools modelled after the German dual training system, for example an enhanced school curriculum reflecting industry-demanded skills, the use of an in-company training plan and a logbook, and the presence of a trained mentor in the company, have been proven effective. The training is part of GPCCI’s effort to replicate and sustain the gains of the K to 12 PLUS Project within SPRCNHS.

The K to 12 PLUS Project is an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development to support the K to 12 educational reform in the Philippines. GPCCI, alongside public and private partners, introduces elements of dual training to the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood Track of Senior High Schools wherein training is conducted in two places: the school and the company.
