Construction-related Occupational Safety and Health Skills to Build Marawi’s Future Workforce

26/05/2021

As part of the ongoing Future Movers Programme, GPCCI conducted the 3rd Industry Placement Committee meeting this May. The bi-monthly meetings with industry representatives and civil society organizations help identify construction-related skills and ways to teach them effectively to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) still affected by the Marawi conflict of 2017.

Construction-related Occupational Safety and Health (COSH) skills have been identified as a key competency among construction workers, besides their technical skills. To better prepare graduates of construction courses and to promote construction site safety, GPCCI is currently developing supplemental COSH teaching materials for Technical Vocational Institutions (TVIs) in Marawi that will be training 500 IDPs under the program. Those materials include self-learn materials such as videos, anticipating continued blended learning modalities of most training centers due to Covid-19. They will also be translated from English into Maranao, the native language spoken in and around Marawi.

With the construction sector being considered as one of the major job-creating industries to help the Philippines in its National Economic Recovery Strategy 2021-2022, GPCCI is proud to support skills development and employment-facilitation through the Future Movers Programme. To further validate the training and hiring practices of construction companies in the Philippines, GPCCI is currently conducting an online survey. The survey is still open until June 11. We value your feedback!
